Exploring the SWB Wolf: The 250GD G Wagon

SWB Wolf

The 250GD Wolf was a purpose-built short-wheelbase (SWB) G Wagon, designed to be a military workhorse for various militaries around the globe. The Mercedes 250GD received the codename "Wolf," from the German Bundeswehr armed forces, known for its capability and reliability across challenging conditions and terrains. Key attributes of this platform include:

  • MB OM602 diesel engine, renowned as the "million-mile" engine
  • Convertible body style with a fold-down windshield for turret operation
  • Part-time 4WD with front and rear locking differentials
  • SWB configuration for maximum maneuverability

While most civilian G Wagons adopted the longer wheelbase, the SWB Wolf maintains the original footprint.

What Makes the SWB Wolf Unique

The SWB Wolf is celebrated for its attractive silhouette, body proportions, and convertible configuration. The wheelbase makes the SWB Wolf exceptionally responsive in tight spaces, ideal for navigating urban environments or trails where bigger G Wagons can feel cumbersome. This model also features frameless windows, adding a modern aesthetic as well as an enhanced open-air feel. One of vehicle's amazing features is the SWB Wolf's removable t-bar and rear roof rack. This enables drivers to enjoy a true open-air experience that retains the safety of a structural B-pillar and functional rear roll bar.

Expedition Motor Company's SWB Wolf

Designing the SWB Wolf for the Modern Driver

When designing the EMC 250GD, we set out to strike a balance between authenticity and modern ingenuity. We have carefully crafted our builds to retain the Wolf's original analog charm while incorporating components such as our proprietary suspension or upgraded engines that allow the driver to enjoy the magic of this model and the usability of a modern vehicle. We have purposefully included and omitted features base on our vision for what a "vintage SWB Wolf" would look like in 2025. We can confirm that our builds do not beep at you or drive themselves. Its up to you to develop a deep connection with your Wolf.

Always Evolving

Each EMC SWB Wolf is an evolution of the last, benefitting from more than eight years worth of dedicated experience. We could be restoring 5 different models, but we do not. Our unwavering focus stems from a deep passion for the Mercedes-Benz 250GD Wolf, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

We currently build 24 G Wagons per year, most as custom orders. You can build your own on our online SWB Wolf configurator and view our currently available inventory on our builds page here.
