1991 620GE Wolf in China Blue – Monterey Car Week Spotlight

Monterey Car Week 2026 - EMC Wolf G Wagon

This year, we brought this 1991 620GE to Monterey Car Week, a representation of where nearly ten years of work on a single platform has steadily taken us: away from simply restoring the vintage G-Wagon and toward re-engineering it, system by system, while preserving everything that made it special and unique.

Exterior

China Blue is a Mercedes MANUFAKTUR color, and it suits the upright geometry of the Wolf exceptionally well, vivid in direct sun and composed under an overcast sky. The body beneath it received the full course of our metal work: stripped to bare steel, hand-corrected, and refinished, with every panel returned to OEM specification before paint. The soft-top body and fold-down windshield remain exactly as the military specified them, because the G-Wagon cabriolet configuration is one of the features that makes this truck so special.

Drivetrain

This is an EMC 620GE, which means the 6.2 liter LS3 V8 sits at the center of the build, delivering its power through a six-speed automatic transmission. Around it is the engineering that earns the designation: our proprietary driveline, upgraded cooling, an AMG braking package matched to the performance, and FOX reservoir suspension. None of these systems are an off-the-shelf installation; each is a solution developed on this platform across the builds that preceded this one, which is why the result drives like a coherent vehicle rather than an engine transplanted into a thirty-year-old chassis. The power is effortless and the delivery is smooth, tuned deliberately away from anything high strung. The same engineering supports every engine we offer, and clients who prefer to stay within the Mercedes diesel family can specify the OM605 or OM606 turbodiesel in place of the V8.

Interior

The Chestnut interior is trimmed in our weatherproof material, chosen for a truck that will spend its life with the top down, and finished with AAA European Oak trim. The modern equipment is integrated rather than added: Vintage Air climate control, heated seats, a wireless Apple CarPlay display, and premium Harman sound, housed in a dashboard whose structure we engineer so the cabin reads as period-correct at a glance and contemporary in use.

The Direction of the Work

Like every EMC build, this truck began as a documented W461, a 1990s G-Wagon retired and decommissioned from NATO military service. It has since been faithfully crafted and re-engineered with restraint, preserving the analog character of the original 250GD while giving the systems beneath it to the present. The result is a restored G-Wagon that carries the vintage charm of the cabrio W461 with improved drivability, comfort, reliability, and understated luxury.

This China Blue Wolf was specified one choice at a time, from paint through drivetrain. A custom G Wagon of your own begins with the same choices, and our completed builds and current inventory, including every G Wagon convertible for sale, are open to explore.
